World Wetlands Day 2007 To view photos of the February 3 event
|
|
Purpose of this World Wetland Day event: Many of our food fish live part of their lives or feed in coastal and fresh water wetlands. As our wetlands deminish, so do the fish. This World Wetland Day 2007 event will engage children and adults alike with fish puppets, group activites, and drawing to raise awareness of wetlands and their fish. |

World Wetlands Day marks the date of the adoption of The Convention on Wetlands
on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits. WWD activities from 1997 to 2006 and from more than 90 countries are posted on the Convention’s web site. Some cool events have been promoting wetlands for years! Ramsar Convention even produces and supplies these snazzy graphics for event posters and website! The Ramsar Convention, officed in Switzerland, also registers unique wetlands from around the world. The USA has 21 Ramsar wetland sites listed. While no current sites are located in our state, almost all Arizonans are linked to the 250,00 ha Mexican site, Humeldales del Delta del Rio Colorado, on the Sea of Cortez just south of Yuma. For more on the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, lists of contacting countries, and unique wetlands, visit www.ramsar.org This treaty serves as the cornerstone for the Service's International Wetlands Program. Visit the US Fish & Wildlife Service's International webpage for lots more, http://www.fws.gov/international/ramsar/ramsar.htm. |
